Transdimensional Reunion

If one of your late ancestors were to come back from the dead and join you for dinner, what things about your family would this person find the most shocking?

“Soooo, who is the translucent being in the living room, Mum?”

“Most probably one from your father’s side. Language barrier, you see?”

“You sure it’s not from yours? I mean, yours migrate and settle here earlier, but they come from the same continent.”

“Well, he recognized your grandfather’s portrait earlier.”

“Oh. Do you want me to try out something?”

“Well, from what I can make out of earlier, I suppose he speaks the dialect. So I guess it’s better for us to wait for your father instead.”

“I reckon he will be pissed at Dad for not ‘carrying out the tradition’. I mean, I wish I can keep in touch with my ethnic roots by speaking the dialect. It’s pretty handy, too.”

“True. Perhaps I might learn something too if your grandfather did not pass away too quickly. Your grandmother and great-aunts don’t really use it that much either.”

“He seems quite collected seeing that there are things in the living room that probably don’t exist when he was around, don’t you think? He seem to be just staring around.”

“Well, you missed the part when he first tried the sofa. He was… err… enjoying it a little too much. Other than that, I think he might be a little disappointed that we don’t have the ancestor shrines in the house with your father being the eldest. That, if I understand correctly.”

“Come to think of it, I was more surprised you don’t immediately call for an exorcist, to be honest.”

“Well, it’s nearing the Ghost Festival, so I guess a visit is just appropriate.”

“But certainly not in a visibly HD version, either.”

“Well, no, but now that he’s there, can’t do anything about it, can you? If he’s family then I suppose it’s a friendly visit. He also seems a little too old to be doing us any harm.”

“Not to mention he’s supernatural, which means he can bend the laws of the nature or something. Why isn’t Dad here already!?”

“He’s on his way home, so in the meantime, rather than spying on our guest, there is something more pressing you can help me with.”

“What could possibly more important than freaking out because there is a proper ghost in our house!?”

“Dinner, of course! Now, do you reckon we cook something traditional or fusion? Oh, I should just make our family special. I hope he likes poached chicken.”

“… Alright, I’ll help with the rice.”
